Sažetak
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the bank performance differences between foreign owned and domestic banks in six South Eastern European countries and to identify the main determinants of bank performance in the region. The banking sectors of the selected set of six Balkan countries have undergone a remarkable transformation from the beginning of the 1990s, which resulted in a relatively consolidated and to a large extent privatized banking industry that is characterized by a heavy presence of foreign owned banks. Therefore the performance measurement issues in these banking markets in relation with the bank ownership structure arise as intriguing research questions that still need to be answered. Our analysis is based on the bank level, industry level and macroeconomic data for the period 1995 – 2004. The first part of the analysis consists of a series of the mean equality tests for four performance measures between foreign owned and domestic banks in each of the investigated countries. The second part of the analysis relies on the econometric analysis of the bank performance determinants in selected banking sectors. Results do not reveal any substantial statistically significant differences in performance of domestic and foreign owned banks, while the econometric tests identify some factors that can be associated with bank performance indicators. However, further research still needs to be done by using updated datasets and by employment of the additional explanatory variables that could better reflect differences in banking business structure among banks.
