Sažetak

Some economists and political leaders in United States and Western nations have proclaimed that offshore outsourcing will benefit all of the offshoring organizations’ stakeholders. According to that scenario, corporations and their shareholders will derive higher profits by sending the work offshore. Those higher profits, thence, will allow new investment in the firm as well as enhanced employment opportunities for workers, either at their current employer or elsewhere in the vibrant economy. Consumers would benefit from a broadened array of products and services at a lower-cost. With their new wealth, consumers in the offshore nations would purchase more goods and services from the Western nations in a virtuous cycle. This scenario is attractive, but it does not reflect the reality of events to date. Job growth in the U.S. following the recession in 2001 has been the most lethargic since the Great Depression, and workers displaced by offshoring have had difficulty finding jobs of equal pay and skill levels. The anemic job growth in the U.S. and lack of improved employment opportunities for outsourced workers, despite an advancing gross domestic product, serves as a cautionary indicator that their transition to offshoring will not be easy in a globalized economy. With anemic wage growth and rising costs, the U.S. middle class is shrinking. It is likely that globalization and the pressure for higher profits will continue this middle-class slide, with myriad implications for the economy and political institutions.
