Sažetak
Private capital flows to and from emerging market countries is an important but poorly understood component of the international financial system. The recent intensification of global economic integration is evident most clearly by the changing volumes and composition of capital flows. The opening up of South African markets together with the well-developed financial system, led to unprecedented volumes and volatility of capital flows. This paper analyzes the volatility of capital flows in a South African context. In this regard, we give an empirical analysis of the components of capital flows to South Africa for the period 1990- 2002. We discuss the relevant factors identified in economic literature in explaining (the volume and volatility) of capital flows to emerging market countries. The challenge for developing economies is to capture the gains from these capital movements while limiting the accompanying risk of volatility and instability. In this regard, we conclude with some policy proposals.
