Stress has become inevitable characteristic of modern life. The reasons for that are tremendous transformations and changes of work, improvements in technology, job insecurity and stronger market competition. Stress appears as a result of rapid changes mentioned above and because of the impossibility to deal with these situations. So the aim of the study is to investigate the causes and effects of job stres sin private and public companies according to the general characteristics of the employees and with the purpose to help manage the stress. Results of the work show that employees, both in private and public sector, are stressed and that stress is more expressed in private sector. Women, older employees, employees with lower level of education and employees in company whose activity is water supply face more stress.
