Small economy is the generator of new job openings and the bearer of economic competitiveness. This paper gives an idea about SMEs in the EU and the future member countries, therefore, in Croatia too. Measures for the SMEs development stimulation are being compared, along with the achieved compatibility level, fields of further activities directed towards survival and development of this sector during and after the association to the EU. Based on the all-consuming analysis, a suggestion of possible further activities for the development, stimulation and increase of the SMEs competitiveness in Croatia would be given in order to successfully respond to global market demands.
