Sažetak

Textile industry has been passed through a lot of changes, concerning its regulations in the world trade. There were several agreements which regulated textile trade through the period from 1940 up until now, when it is again returned to the GATT rules. Each of the agreements brought different conditions of trade for developed and less developed countries. Followed by many changes, textile had been through a basic change under a 10-year schedule agreed in the Uruguay Round. The system of import quotas have been removed, after dominating the trade since the early 1960s. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview about the position of the textile industry in the last decades. It has been analyzed and presented how the most significant trade agreements and their replacements influenced the textile and clothing sector. In the first part of the second chapter the basic elements and stages of the world textile trade will be analyzed, precisely in the period before total removal of the quota system (a chronological overview of textile in the world trade and the agreements on textiles and clothing). In the second part the insight in textile agreements will be presented, describing the key elements of the Multi-fibre arrangement, Agreement on Textiles and Clothing and gradual integration of products to the old GATT rules. The four steps of integration have been analyzed and the main phases are illustrated, together with the definition and role of the Textile Monitoring Body in the whole integration process. Furthermore, the third chapter provides statistics of textile trade, regarding the most important export and import countries and their industry shares. Finally, the last chapter is consisted of the brief description concerning the current and recent textile position in the world trade. It has been analyzed and described which are the main issues related to textile industry in Doha round, the rise of China in the world textile trade and how is the textile sector affected by the global financial crisis. The methods that were used were mainly descriptive research and analyzing method, combined with the historical path and statistical insight regarding the topic.
