Sažetak

The objective of the paper is to investigate two main research issues. First, since innovations have been found to be a major contributor to productivity growth in manufacturing, we study the question whether there is any evidence that the average service firm has a lower propensity than the average manufacturing firm to be innovative. Second, we explore whether the service firms are less efficient than manufacturing firms in deriving benefits from innovation. The empirical analysis is based on representative data from the Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP). Thus, our cross-section data set consists of 4,274 companies out of which 1,839 are operating in manufacturing and mining. The main finding suggests that engagement in innovative behaviour varies significantly among the industrial sectors. For instance, electrical engineering and chemical industry feature the highest propensity of inclining into innovation activities among firms in manufacturing and mining. Regarding the service sector, the most innovative are companies operating in IT and telecommunication, and technical service. Despite the various limitation faced, this study finds a consistent positive relation between innovation behaviour and entrepreneurial performance for manufacturing, mining and business service firms in Germany.
