Sažetak
Last ten years are important for the depository institutions in Croatia not only because of the peculiarities that pertain to local conditions, but also due to the impact of many changes that affected the functioning of the depository institutions in general. The economic transition required transformation of depository institutions into joint stock companies. This process ran in parallel with the restructuring of the economy and first bailouts of the banks. Liberalization of entry into the market for the new depository institutions was started with the intention to create a new generation of depository institutions established as joint stock companies, privately owned, with new attitudes and new management philosophy. It was expected of these banks to become an important element of the financial architecture because they weren’t burdened with the problems from the past. This sequence of events will probably never happen again, both due to the nature of the transformation and the accumulated experience. Optimization is a result of a process that involves many components (security, liquidity, risk, and profits). There are many variables that affect business environment, and some of them are hard to predict, like changes in domestic as well as international business and political environment. And when the management fails, it may be hard to disentangle the subjective elements from the environment. Croatia didn’t lag behind with the restructuring process of the financial system, which enabled the entry of the foreign capital into that sector, unlike other sectors. This process was profound and very high; perhaps too high share of the financial system ended up owned by the foreigners, which remains to be seen. The chance of recurring blows and seatbacks of the financial system can’t be totally ignored. The process of bailout and restructuring of the financial system was not accompanied with the deep restructuring of the real sector, which may have unexpected consequences. The private sector remains underdeveloped, while big systems from the previous system were bailed-out, but they weren’t restructured to sufficient degree. It is hard to expect constant progress of the financial system without this taking place.
