Sažetak
This paper focuses on the processes and stages of internationalisation of SMEs and the current national and local agency support and delivery systems (Danson et al, 2004) and the role of SMEs in regeneration (Danson et al, 2001 & 2004). The conceptual framework focuses on SMEs and regionally based economic development and regeneration initiatives, endogenous economic growth and the role of regional and economic development agencies (EDAs) in these processes. Strategies for SME development in Scotland, and the implementation of institutional support for them are examined. An overview of the SME sector in Central and Eastern Europe follows, leading to an analysis of Poland’s national and regional SME strategy, and the support structures in the Ślaskie voivodship (incorporating Katowice). The paper concludes by drawing together the main themes linking SMEs and EDA based strategies for economic growth and regional regeneration, and the lessons for small and transitional economies learned from the research projects.
