Sažetak
There co-exist several problems when measuring the level of competitiveness. The major one is that it represents an integral indicator of the enterprise performance. The indicator has something in common with the notion of the utility function used in economics. The latter one stamps a numerical equivalent of the utility associated by an individual from the consumption of certain goods. Nevertheless, it stays an implicit (unobservable) function. Though it is obviously impossible to deal with the utility function, it is never-the-less possible to interpret the consumer choice. That is called the revealed preferences approach. Even then there is no opportunity to find the functional dependence of the amount of good consumed and the utility. The same problem arises when attempting to estimate the level of competitiveness. It is possible to differentiate companies by the profit amount at each point in time. But we are unable to explain the profit solely by using one determinant (price or quality of the good, company’s market position). That is why integrated evaluations are used to estimate competitiveness. This paper has its goal to analyze the competitiveness dynamics of Russian manufacturing by dealing with ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ competitiveness indicators that are found to be low correlated. Then the measures (especially, the modernization ones) enabling to augment the competitiveness are investigated. It is found that only motivation stimulating measures may be of statistical significance when impacting the competitiveness. Finally, certain policy options are proposed to increase the overall industrial competitiveness. The work is organized as follows. Part 2 provides a brief overview of the recent progress made in the field of enterprise competitiveness analysis. The third part describes the data and methodology used. The fourth deals with ‘objective’ competitive indicators. Among them are the output per worker, dynamics of total factor productivity, unit labour costs. Then the research is done using ‘subjective’ indicators derived from the management point of view on the level of competitiveness of their enterprises. The fifth part studies the relation between ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ indicators. As there is no strong correlation found, an explanation why they do not coincide is provided. The sixth part provides an econometric analysis of the determinants influencing both the ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ competitiveness indicators. The seventh part concludes suggesting the policy options able to stimulate Russian enterprises to augment their efficiency.
