Sažetak
Without any doubt globalization is currently the most important development for economies all over the world. One can identify two main forces induced by globalization (Audretsch/Turik 2001). First, there is a new and growing competition from countries in Eastern Europe and Asia offering low-cost labour forces which are nevertheless qualified and diligent. On the other hand, innovations in the telecommunications and computer sector have significantly reduced the cost of shifting information to low-cost countries on the other side of the globe. Globalization allows companies to find and enter new markets – i.e. be an active player in the so-called international arena –, and as a result to raise their revenues and profits. But nonetheless, the two forces described above intensify competition. Each company has to make large efforts in order to be competitive: reduce costs, improve organisational structures, be innovative, and others. While large companies very often react effectively and efficiently to the pressure globalization causes, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) face a lot of problems. To resolve these problems co-operation could be an appropriate strategy (Schmidt/Kiefer 2003). Internationally oriented co-operation represents a means to support the internationalization process of SME. The latter inevitably depends on the different knowledge and experience of the actors as well as on the legal, cultural and economic frameworks and traditions of their home countries. That’s why this paper will provide a comparison between two large areas of the world, i.e. Asia and Europe. It presents an analysis of the attitudes of European and Asian SME towards co-operation and of their preferences concerning this matter. Hereby, the authors will delineate the situation in Europe based on several studies and other sources. In order to reduce complexity, the situation in Asia is depicted by using a study conducted by Albstadt-Sigmaringen University among SME in Malaysia (Sommer/Dogan 2004).
