Sažetak

The possible impact of globalisation on resources is explained by means of the Heckscher-Ohlin theory. Trade patterns should reflect differences in the distribution of endowments across countries. Countries export goods embodying factors of production with which they are well-endowed. The standard Stopler-Samuelson predicts that free trade allows those abundant in unskilled labour to shift towards unskilled labour intensive production raising unskilled wages relative to skilled wages. This paper investigates the impact of globalisation on employment and wages in the South African manufacturing sector for the period 1993 to 2001. Globalisation led to a more open economy. Export volumes increased and manufacturing goods gained ground relative to mining products. Within the manufacturing basket, labour intensive goods became more important. Productivity increased, but there was no net job creation and unskilled wages did not increase. Regression results indicate that exports do have a positive effect on employment, but only for highly skilled workers and not semi- and unskilled ones.
