Sažetak
Unsustainable patterns of production and consumption are causing many environmental, social and economical problems. Considering that those problems have long-term and, sometimes, irreversible effects, it is necessary to increase the level of information, motivation, environmental consciousness and environmental literacy of all relevant stakeholders in order to redirect the society towards sustainable patters of production and consumption. The purpose of the paper is to point put the importance of public authorities, as significant market players as buyers of goods and services, on the road towards sustainability. For many years the single most important indicator in the practice of public purchasing was the economic factor. Environmental and social factors were seldom if ever taken into account. Sustainable procurement means that contracting authorities take into accounts all three pillars of sustainable development (economy, environment, society) when procuring goods, services or works at all stages of the project. The paper consists of three parts. The first part of the paper describes the features of sustainable public procurement and its significance as a booster of competitiveness. The second part of the paper analyzes the challenges with which the EU Member States are faced in regarding the process of implementation of sustainable public procurement. The third part analyse the features of public procurement in Croatia emphasizing different advantages which can result from the implementation of sustainable public procurement.
