Storytelling, the art of narrating a tale from memory rather than reading it is one of the oldest of all art forms, reaching back to prehistoric times. Storytelling is the original form of teaching and has the potential of fostering emotional intelligence and help the child gain insight into human behaviour. Contemporary society may be seen as technopoly, that is to say, a society dominated and controlled through new technological forms. This society is a society where we produce increasingly vast quantities of information, but without any means of evaluating this. Storytelling, besides promoting language learning by enriching learners’ vocabulary and acquiring new language structures, may provide a means to fight the increased reliance upon television which undermines and replaces group learning, cooperation and social responsibility.
